Solenoid valves are very common and very important devices for the proper conduct of a process, having the role of closing or opening a certain route, very common for washing machines, and I will present some relevant information to understand their role.
The solenoid valve is an important part of the washing machine, making it possible to supply hot or cold water, depending on the type of machine or program. This makes the connection between the supply hose and the water source and allows water to enter the car, depending on its needs. In case you have a problem with the water supply, either it has a low flow or it does not reach at all, then you can clean the hose to remove any deposits and, if the problem is still not solved, the solenoid valve must be replaced.
It is not a difficult operation, but you must choose a model compatible with the type of home washing machine.
How does a washing machine solenoid valve work?
The water supply source for the washing machine is connected to it by means of a hose which has a solenoid valve, which is controlled by electric current, in order to operate in accordance with the program. Thus it will open to allow water to enter the car, respecting the amount needed, and will close automatically after the entire quantity has been brought.
Failure to do so may result in a shallow wash, with too little water, at a temperature that is not in accordance with the program settings, in case the machine is supplied directly with hot water, or may even cause the washing machine to stop. The solenoid valve cannot be repaired, but must be replaced.
What tools do you need to have to change a solenoid valve on the washing machine?
Even if it is a simple operation, you need a few tools at hand to be able to work in good conditions and not to make too much dirt. Thus you must have: a pliers, screwdrivers of several types, multimeter, flashlight, a bucket and, of course, the new solenoid valve to replace.
Before purchasing a new solenoid valve, check that the supply hoses are not clogged, and clean the filters to make sure the problem is a faulty solenoid valve. When you go shopping, make sure you have all the data about the washing machine, to choose a compatible model.
Disconnect the washing machine from the water and electricity source before working
The first step you need to do, when you want to check the condition of the hoses and the solenoid valve, is to disconnect the washing machine. This way you will remove the plug from the socket so that there are no unpleasant accidents and you will close the water supply tap, so as not to cause a flood.
Even if you have stopped the water supply, both hot and cold, if necessary, there is still a quantity of water left on the hose, so position the bucket in such a way that you can easily place the ends of the hoses.
With the help of the pliers, try to loosen the washer a little, in order to be able to disconnect the hose, then undo it by hand. You will put the free end of the hose in the bucket, to empty the water left in it.
Check the filters
Trapping dirt and other residues in filters can lead to clogging, which will make it difficult for water to enter. You can easily clean them and, if this was the problem, you escaped without having to replace the part, ie the car wash solenoid valve .
Even if the filters are clean, the hoses can be clogged, so check them as well. With the help of the flashlight you will see more easily the condition of the filters inside the hose and try to clean them carefully, so as not to damage them.
Checking the solenoid valve
With the help of the screwdriver, you will open the lid of the washing machine, in front or behind, depending on the model, in order to have access to the solenoid valve. Carefully untie the ties and label them so you can put them back in place. Using a multimeter, check for current on the two connecting wires. If there is no resistance on the multimeter screen, it displays 0 or infinity, then the solenoid valve is defective and must be replaced.

If you have checked the solenoid valve and it needs a replacement, go to the next step. Depending on the model of the washing machine, the price of a solenoid valve may differ, but compared to the purchase price of a new appliance, the investment to replace it is very small.
In online specialty stores you can find countless models with prices starting from 20-30 lei, and if you are a practical person and you like to do various household chores, you can replace it yourself, especially if the washing machine came out guarantee. Thus, with a little patience and skill, you will have no other costs besides the purchase price.
To replace a defective solenoid valve you must disconnect the washing machine from the power supply (you will unplug it) and turn off the water supply tap. If it is a model that has two water supply components, hot and cold, you will turn them both off.
Carefully disconnect the hose and empty it into a bucket, as it will have water left over from the last use. Using the screwdriver, loosen the screws that secure the back or front cover to the washing machine, and remove it to gain access to the solenoid valve.
You have to be very careful about the color of the wires and their position in order to be able to mount the new solenoid valve correctly, so label them and possibly take a photo to be safer. To disconnect the wires you must pull the attached plugs. Most of the time, the solenoid valve is attached to the hose with the help of a clamp that you have to unscrew, either with a screwdriver, if it is fastened in screws, or with the help of a pliers, if it is of another type.
Disconnect the solenoid valve from the water inlet hose in the car.
Check again that you have taken a correct replacement part, or go directly with the part to the store, so as not to have problems buying a model that is not compatible. The new part is fixed following in reverse the operations you performed when disconnecting.
