In this guide we will deal with the planers combined with wire and thickness, a stationary electric tool widely used both in the hobby and professional field, we will see what features the various models have according to the intended use and how to choose one that suits your needs.
We also included the review of the seven combined planes currently most in demand, both in the professional and hobby users. The most popular models, in both categories, are the DeWalt D27300-QS , which is the best-selling in the professional plane category, and the Einhell TC-SP 204 , a combined plane for hobbyists with a particularly advantageous price.
11 best planers and thicknessers – 2020 ranking
And here we are at the most requested combined planers, thickness and thickness, among all the models currently on the market; starting from the best-selling models, both in the professional and hobby category.
DeWalt D27300-QS wire planer and 260mm thickness
According to the opinions of the buyers, also confirmed by the sales data, the DeWalt D27300 is one of the best thread and thickness planers of 2020, among the various models on the market intended for professional use.
The DeWalt planer and thicknesser, in fact, stands out above all for its high price, which makes it accessible almost exclusively to professional users, but like the cost, the services offered are also of a high standard. It has a robust and resistant structure, built in die-cast aluminum alloy, and an induction motor with 2,100 watts of power capable of generating a speed of 6,200 rpm.
The maximum width of the work surface is 260 mm, the latter is equipped with rubber-coated feed rollers and protection for the knives, in order to ensure a high degree of precision. The only limitation, as mentioned before, is given by the high cost, accessible only to professionals.
Professional: The DeWalt planer and thicknesser is a stationary machine designed especially for professional carpenters and carpenters; it is powerful, solid, robust and also extremely precise in cutting.
Safe: The planer is equipped with all the devices necessary to work in complete tranquility: overload protection, knife protection and safety switch against accidental start.
Precise: Apart from the knife protection device, the high precision of the machine is ensured by the presence of the blade calibration device and the adjustable stop.
Price: It costs a lot, but moreover it is understandable since it is a stationary machine designed for carpentry and carpentry workshops.
Einhell TC-SP 204 planer combined with wire and thickness
For hobbyists who are wondering where to buy a planer at low prices, we recommend taking a look at the TC-SP 204, produced by the German company Einhell; among the various models that we have compared in our guide, in fact, this is the cheapest of all.
The Einhell wire and thickness planer has a 1,500 Watt motor that generates an empty speed of 9,000 rpm and is equipped with protection devices and anti-vibration feet, in order to guarantee safety and stability. The structure is quite solid and the worktop, made of aluminum, is also complete with a tilting guide for chamfering the edges.
Despite having good characteristics, however, the TC-SP 204 still remains an economical Einhell stationary machine, intended exclusively for hobby use. Before putting it to work, it is better to provide a general check and make the necessary adjustments.
Wide accessibility: The economic price of this planer combined with wire and thickness is aimed above all at the amateur and hobby user range; the performance, however, is also adequate for the cost of the tool.
Solid and resistant: The weight of 30 kilograms testifies that the construction of the Einhell plane is robust and massive; the worktop is also made entirely of die-cast aluminum.
Safe: It has an overload protection switch and anti-vibration feet, it is also designed for connection to an extractor fan thanks to the integrated 100 mm diameter tube.
Assembly: It is better to subject the Einhell to a general check before use and, if necessary, make the necessary adjustments and tighten the screws where needed.
Femi PF150 planer and thicknesser Job Line
Among the best-selling economic models, the Femi wire and thickness planer also occupies a good position. The PF150 Job Line, in fact, is only slightly more expensive than the Einhell; although it is intended exclusively for non-intensive hobby use, however, some buyers prefer it as it is produced by an Italian company.
From the assembly point of view, in fact, the Femi offers slightly higher production standards than the Einhell, therefore the PF150 is very solid, resistant and above all assembled with a certain care; consequently it generates less vibrations, and therefore it is also less noisy.
In any case, it still remains a hobby-level machine, therefore it is subject to limitations not only as regards the level of performance. The lateral guide, in fact, makes a little play; moreover, the connection to the vacuum cleaner is mandatory as the chips easily clog the machine.
Assembly: Between the Einhell examined previously and the Femi PF150, the latter is certainly the best planer thickness and thickness as regards the care in the assembly.
Low noise: The better assembly also helps to reduce vibrations, which is why the Femi is less noisy than the other surface and thickness planers belonging to the same price range.
Affordable cost: The price is only slightly higher than the Einhell combo plane with which we have compared it, therefore easily accessible for hobbyists and amateurs.
Swarf : The PF150 requires constant cleaning otherwise the swarf will clog the machine; best to keep it always connected to a dust extraction system.
Compa Mini Kompacta KOMP.250 / 2 flush and thickness planer
The most demanding hobbyists looking for a new combined planer model and are willing to spend a little more to get better performance, would do well to take a look at the Mini Kompacta 250/2, produced by the Compa company, which has a cutting width of 254 mm.
The latter, in fact, is precisely the feature that makes Mini Kompacta so sought after, in spite of the clearly higher price compared to the wire and thickness planers examined previously. Aside from this, the Compa wire and thickness planer is also equipped with automatic feed, tilting plane from 0 to 45 degrees and 100 mm diameter nozzle for connection to the vacuum cleaner.
The only limitation of this plane is the setup; in fact, to obtain good results and a completely burr-free cut, you need to know how to adjust it. For this reason, it is mainly recommended for the most experienced and demanding hobbyists.
Medium-high quality: The Mini Kompacta belongs to the medium price range and occupies a fairly high position inside, as evidenced by the price of the machine, but the quality and performance are equally superior.
Cutting width: While budget-grade hobby planers rarely exceed a cutting width of 200 millimeters, the Mini Kompacta reaches 254 millimeters.
Precise: In spite of the economic models, the Mini Kompacta is clearly superior also as regards the level of precision in the cut.
Registration: Setting up the machine so that it offers maximum performance is not easy; for this reason, and for the price, it is recommended only for more experienced hobbyists.
Fervi Art. 0749 planer combined with wire and thickness
With the Fervi wire and thickness planer we return to the category of high-end products, intended for intensive professional use. Article 0749 in fact, like the DeWalt examined above, is a stationary machine for workshops and carpentry and carpentry workshops.
Compared to the DeWalt, the Fervi combined planer has the advantage of costing almost a third less, but the difference in price necessarily translates into more limited features; the cutting width, for example, is 250 millimeters against the 260 of DeWalt. The engine also has a power of 1,500 watts and a speed of 4,000 rpm, while the DeWalt offers 2,000 watts and 6,200 rpm.
This does not mean that the Fervi is still an excellent machine, however, ideal for professionals who do not have too high demands and therefore can afford to save something while maintaining a high level of quality and performance.
Professional: The characteristics of the Fervi combined planer are excellent, as is expected from a professional stationary machine of this capacity; does not reach the performance of DeWalt but on the other hand costs less.
Cutting width: Also in this it is second to DeWalt, but with its 250 millimeters it is superior to all the others that we have examined in our guide.
Solid and robust: The cabinet configuration, with the frame covered by removable bulkheads, makes it solid and robust, ideal for carpentry and carpentry workshops; the worktop is also made of cast iron, to offer greater strength and durability.
For professionals only: The price is much more advantageous than the DeWalt, but it is still too high for a hobbyist. It is intended for professionals only.
Holzmann HOB 260ABS 230V combined planer wire and thickness
The HOB 260ABS is produced by the Austrian company Holzmann, and is a modern stationary machine, equipped with sound-absorbing slots in the planing tables, to ensure soundproofing, and with an integrated suction system complete with dust collector.
It is driven by a single-phase electric motor that can work in continuous service, with an absorption of 1,500 watts, and in periodic uninterrupted service with an absorption of 2,100 watts; as regards the cut, however, the maximum width is 260 mm and the height 160 mm. Its characteristics are very articulated and the machine is undoubtedly professional in all aspects, but it is also an entry level product in its category.
The price is decidedly advantageous, therefore, but the worktops are made of aluminum instead of cast iron, and the instruction manual does not contain the Italian translation.
Price: Among the various professional models examined in the guide, the Holzmann wire and thickness planer is the one characterized by the most convenient price, both compared to Fervi and DeWalt.
Integrated aspirator: There is no need to connect it to external systems, Holzmann has an aspiration system with integrated dust collector, and thanks to the bags it is easy to empty it if necessary.
Acoustically insulated: The lower part of the worktops has sound-absorbing slats that drastically reduce the noise, which by the way is not excessive, however, since the motor is induction.
Worktop: The worktop is made of aluminum, so the sliding of the pieces is less fluid than a cast iron top. Given the professional nature of the machine, this is an important detail.
Scheppach HMS1070 planer combined with wire and thickness
The Planer thickness and thickness planer is at the top of the medium range, it is therefore a stationary machine of the hobby class but with high performance and is recommended for more expert and demanding users.
The intrinsic limitations, in this case, are represented above all by the absence of cast iron among the manufacturing materials, by the transmission belt in simple rubber instead of cloth, therefore of short duration, and by the input feed roller, also covered in rubber instead of entirely metal. On the other hand, its performances are excellent, very close to the professional level, and once properly adjusted, the Scheppach ensures excellent results.
To maintain these optimal results, however, the HMS1070 requires frequent maintenance, especially cleaning, and since its cost is still high, it is not recommended for beginner hobbyists, for whom the Einhell and Femi examined previously are more suitable.
Performance: The cutting width is 254 millimeters, this aspect combined with other characteristics and high performance, place it at the top of the range in the range of power tools intended for hobby use.
Precise: Unlike the medium-low range hobby planers, the Scheppach can also guarantee high precision. The lateral guide, in fact, is not a simple sheet metal but a solid aluminum sheet with a centimeter thickness,
Well assembled : The pieces that compose it, including the mobile ones, do not have any games and the machine is very well built, solid and stable.
Parts that wear easily: The drive belt is made of rubber and does not last long, it is better to replace it immediately with a cloth belt. The infeed feed roller is also covered in rubber.
Bosch Home and Garden PHO 2000 – Review
The guarantee of a historical brand
The German company Bosch is one of the most famous brands in Europe and in the world, active in the production of industrial heating, cogeneration and air conditioning systems, packaging technologies, safety systems, auto components and accessories, diagnostics for workshops, household appliances, power tools and even software.
As for the power tool production line, Bosch has two different series: Professional and Home and Garden. The Professional series includes power tools intended for professional use, which are distinguishable by the blue color of their shell.
The Home and Garden series, on the other hand, much more simply known as the Hobby line, includes power tools intended primarily for the user group made up of DIY and DIY enthusiasts; the equipment of the Hobby line is distinguished by the classic green color of their body and, depending on the type of tool, they are sometimes also appreciated by professional users, as in the case of the Bosch PHO 2000 electric planer.
Compact, handy and powerful
The Bosch PHO 2000 is a planer with compact dimensions and weighing about 2.4 kilograms; despite the weight, however, it is an extremely handy tool, thanks to the double ergonomic handle, and also easy to use since the control buttons are located on the main handle.
The design of the tool also takes into account the possible needs of a left-handed operator, as the control buttons are easily accessible from both sides and the chip ejection is also possible on one side or the other depending of the position you want to take while working.
Aside from the manageability and the comfort of use, the Bosch electric planer is also equipped with a powerful electric motor, 680 Watts, capable of generating a speed of 19,500 revolutions per minute, and this is precisely what makes it perform at the point. to have attracted the sympathy of many professional craftsmen.
Despite being a hobby electric tool, in fact, if used in a non-intensive way it can also deal with professional jobs that do not require a particular efficiency in terms of precision nor too intensive use of the planer.
Woodrazor cutting system
Its excellent performance is guaranteed not only by the powerful engine, but also by the Woodrazor cutting system, exclusive patent of Bosch. The system consists of a high quality hard metal blade, capable of producing smooth and perfectly machined surfaces which in most cases do not require further finishing.
The only aspect that affects the yield of the Bosch planer and limits its use to the hobby field, therefore, is its cutting capacity; in fact, the blade has a width of 82 millimeters and a stop depth which is limited to 8 millimeters only.
Although it is not very suitable for intensive professional use, however, a completely normal aspect since it is a Bosch Hobby tool, the PHO 2000 is the ideal tool for small home maintenance jobs, such as planing doors and windows trimming the roof beams or removing old or damaged paint layers.
The favorite of DIY enthusiasts
The greatest admirers of the Bosch electric planer, however, remain DIY enthusiasts. In fact, for this particular user group, the PHO 2000 represents an almost “professional” tool thanks to the level of yield and performance it offers.
The compact dimensions allow it to be used even in confined spaces, in addition, the chip ejection system can be connected to a collection bag or a vacuum cleaner, so as to always keep the work area clean; these aspects, combined with the ease of use and the possibility of being able to use it from any side, are all characteristics extremely appreciated by hobbyists, especially those who are beginners.
The value of the Bosch electric planer is given precisely by its performance, which has satisfied not only the amateur clientele but also many craftsmen, who consider it one of the most successful power tools among all those belonging to the Bosch Home and Garden line.
Unfortunately it is sold without a case or other accessories, and in a simple cardboard box. But it is a condonable flaw considering the hobby nature of the power tool, and above all its belonging to the cheaper range.
Although devoid of accessories and sold in a very spartan package, the Bosch electric planer is one of the best power tools available in the Home and Garden line.
Dewalt D27300-QS Surface and Thickness Planer, 260 mm
The DeWalt D27300 is specially designed for carpentry and carpentry workshops; It is a professional stationary machine that falls among the top models in its specific category, therefore its greatest value is given by the excellent performance in all aspects.
The cost of almost 2,000 euros makes it a niche product, intended exclusively for professionals in the sector who have intensive use needs and also require a high degree of precision.
The planer and thicknesser D27300 is nothing short of excellent but very expensive and therefore recommended only for professional users.
Surface planer and thickness planer Einhell 1500 Watt combined planer
Who is already familiar with other Einhell power tools, knows very well that the main advantage of these machines is given by the cost, which is among the lowest in the hobby category. Consequently, the performances are proportionate to the category and price of the planer.
Assembly is one of the painful notes of Einhell power tools in general, so before putting the planer to work it is good to undergo a general check and appropriate adjustments.
Its performances are limited but in the hobby category the Einhell combined plane is one of the most appreciated; above all thanks to the convenience of the price.
Femi Pf150 – Thickness Planer
The Femi PF150 is an economic combined plane of the hobby category. Its advantage is that of being assembled carefully, overall, it is solid and generates few vibrations, keeping the noise level relatively low.
The mechanics are delicate and to prevent the machine from clogging it is advisable to subject it to frequent maintenance, especially as regards cleaning from shavings and dust.
Again we are faced with a low-cost hobby plane, but a little more expensive than the Einhell combo plane.
Surface and thickness planer knives
Einhell TH-SP 204 set with two spare knives
This set of knives for planer and thicknesser is an original Einhell replacement for the TC-SP 204 combined planer, this means that it can only be mounted on this machine.
Given the high number of specimens sold, it is therefore clear that the Einhell combined plane is among the most popular models in the hobby field. These stationary machines, in fact, have blade fixing systems that differ from model to model, therefore for each of them there are the respective specific spare knives.
Like the machine itself, Einhell spare knives are also highly appreciated for their affordable cost and good sharpening, but they are somewhat cumbersome to assemble.
How to choose the best wire and thickness planers
The importance of the intended use
Deciding which planer and thicknesser to buy, among all the models currently on the market, may not be an easy thing; in the eyes of those with little experience in the field, moreover, and therefore novice DIY enthusiasts, the machines available in the various market segments seem to look a bit like all of them.
Consequently, to understand how to choose a good planer, thickness and thickness, you must first start from the frequency of use and the type of work for which it is intended, the same applies if it is a gift to give to a loved one. The machines intended for hobby or amateur use, in fact, cost less than those intended for professional use, but they are also less performing and less precise.
Taking into account the different categories and price ranges, therefore, in general terms the cost of a surface planer and thickness can vary from about 250-300 euros up to 2,000 euros and beyond, depending on the differences of the case and the manufacturer.
The medium-low end models
As we mentioned in the previous paragraph, the surface and thickness planers that are placed in the medium-low market range are those characterized by the cheapest prices, always in relation to the type of power tool and the relative prices in proportion to the quality and performance.
These machines are obviously limited, but this does not mean that they are not functional; they are simply intended for a range of users who will make limited and non-intensive use of them, and which for this reason does not have the absolute need to spend large amounts on a machine that is performing and more precise, but oversized to the actual work needs.
In this range you can find excellent combined planes, but it is important to establish some stakes as far as spending is concerned; the cheaper models, in fact, are recommended exclusively for DIY enthusiasts, as they would not withstand the effort of intensive or excessively prolonged use.
Furthermore, their cost is “economic” only in a relative way, because the cost for one of these machines is in any case around 250 to 650 euros, depending on the characteristics of the model and the manufacturer.
From 650 to 1,500 euros and above, however, the mid-range models are placed, which are also intended for hobby use, but are designed to ensure a great deal of craftsmanship and therefore offer significantly superior performance to that of the planers and thickness cheaper, both in terms of work and precision and for noise and comfort of use.
The surface and thickness planers for professional use
In the medium-high range, on the other hand, there are both the top-of-the-range models of the hobby range and those intended for professional use, from the basic to the top models. In this case, the price of the machine has a starting base of not less than 1,250 euros, and can go up to 2,000 euros and even more, depending on the model chosen.
It is not surprising that the prices are so substantial starting from the basic segment, the planer and thicknesser, in fact, is a combined stationary machine that combines the functions of two different types of planer in one, with a consequent saving of space in the laboratory and an increase in efficiency and working times.
The professional models, therefore, rank high not only for their excellent performance, but also for the cost. This type of combined planers, of course, are intended for workshops and carpentry and carpentry workshops, or for professionals in general.
What is the wire and thickness planer for?
The planer is made up of three sections: the two work surfaces and the central shaft that divides them, on which the knives are mounted. The surface planer can work a single face at a time, therefore, and if the piece needs to be planed on both sides, the machine is not able to ensure that these are perfectly parallel to each other.
Furthermore, the planer does not suffer from any limitation regarding the thickness of the pieces to be worked, but you must exert pressure on the piece while passing on the work surface, obviously taking care to keep your hands away from the area where the knives are located .
The thickness planer, on the other hand, has a knife holder shaft similar to that of the planer, but is equipped with a single work surface instead of two. The top can be adjusted in height so as to be approached or moved away from the knife holder shaft, and the distance between the top and the knives can vary from a minimum of 4 up to a maximum of 300 millimeters, depending on the adjustments allowed by the machine.
Also in this case the processing takes place one facade at a time but the characteristic of the plane that is raised (by bringing the piece closer to the rollers and the shaft with the knives) allows to obtain a precise and perfectly parallel planing if the piece is placed on the side that has already undergone planing.
The surface and thickness planer, on the other hand, combines the characteristics of both the types described above, therefore it is mainly used in carpentry and carpentry workshops, where both types of processing are usually carried out very frequently and the machines are subjected to a regime more intensive.
Furthermore, the level of precision in planing plays an equally important role, as we have seen previously, in fact, the planer alone cannot guarantee the perfect parallelism of the facades. Since precision in the work is a need felt not only in the professional field, but also in the amateur one, on the market you can also find flush and thickness planers with a more accessible price, therefore destined for the user group composed of hobbyists and lovers do it yourself.
How to use a wire planer and thicknesser
How the wire planer and thicknesser works
As we mentioned earlier, the piece of wood being worked on a planer must be pressed against the work surface and pushed against the knives, continuing to exert pressure also on the part of the piece that is on the exit plane. In the thickness planer, on the other hand, just slowly push the piece on the surface until it is “hooked” by the input roller, which pushes it against the knife holder shaft.
The planer alone cannot therefore guarantee that the facades of the piece are perfectly parallel and at an angle of 90 ° to the edges, which is why after having planed one and a edge at the edge, you need the planer to thickness to finish the work on the opposite facade and edge, in a clean and above all precise way.
Consequently, the surface and thickness planer is a stationary machine that combines both processing methods, therefore in the upper part it is structured like a normal surface planer: i.e. it has two support surfaces, the input and the exit, separated from the knife holder shaft.
Both floors are independently adjustable, the exit one must always be parallel to the maximum height reached by the knives, while the input one is adjusted for a lower height, which can be two-three millimeters or even more, at depending on the case.
In the lower part of the machine, there is a third work surface and two rotating rollers, placed at a certain distance from each other so as to be in front of and behind the knife-holder shaft. The input roller is equipped with transversal grooves, so as to “cling” to the piece of wood and hold it firmly while pushing it towards the knives, while the output roller is grooved in turn, or covered with a rubber layer, in so as to adhere to the piece just planed without damaging the surface, but with enough pressure to continue pushing it towards the exit.
The lower work surface is adjustable in height, so as to adapt to the dimensions of the piece of wood to be planed; the maximum thickness allowed, however, usually does not exceed 300 millimeters, with the exception of specific machines made for industrial use and in particular for planing the metal.
The planer and thicknesser, therefore, is a machine with a dual function, but this does not mean that it can work two pieces of wood at the same time, and not even plan a single piece on both sides at the same time.
The need to combine the two types of machines in one is only due to the saving of space and the frequency with which planing must be carried out which require a high degree of precision, to obtain which it is necessary to use the thickness planing.
