The problem of this welder, according to some, is that it is still a little known product. In reality, it is reliable and versatile, although far from reaching the quality level of a Telwin.

Buying guide - How to choose the best wire welding machines?

Establish your needs

For a novice hobbyist, it may be somewhat challenging to decide which wire welder to buy from the many models available on the market especially if you buy it online to further save on spending. To understand how to choose a good wire welder, you must have at least a minimum of knowledge on the different welding techniques used today and then adjust accordingly according to your needs and the type of use you intend to make of the system welding whether professional or purely hobbyist.

The difference in yield dramatically affects the price. In fact, all welding machines belonging to the most close range are to be considered exclusively from amateur use, for DIY, or for occasional small chores of home maintenance.

In the medium price range,  it is possible to find significantly more performing wire welders to the point of being perfectly able to deal with professional-level work with intensive use but always on an occasional basis.

The economic and the No Gas wire welders

In the range of low-cost products, you can find numerous models and some products even by quite famous brands, such as Stanley. In this market segment, prices can vary from 80 dollars for the cheapest models up to 150-170 for the top of the range models.

The welders belonging to this range are intended almost exclusively for hobbyists with the due exceptions for some top models that offer superior performance while being in the economic range. The level of performance they offer is optimized for non-intensive and occasional use.

They are easy to use, and even if they are made with lower quality materials, and therefore less durable. They are still reliable and ideal for those who do not have details. Needs and use them only for hobbies, or for some small chores to do on free weekends.

In this range, you can also find many No Gas welders that use cored wire instead of the one usually used by standard wire welders. The common flaw of cheap wire welders, including No Gas models. It is the poor quality of the accessories supplied and the quality level of the welds themselves.

Medium-high end wire welders

The spending budget necessary for the purchase of a medium-high end wire welding machine starts from at least 190-200 dolalrs, up to 500-600 dollars and more depending on the chosen system and its features.

On the other hand, medium-high end welding machines are distinguished by a more extensive versatility of use, better structural qualities, first-class manufacturing materials, and, significantly higher performance than the models of the economic range.

All these features and the price are making them suitable only for a niche of users that includes both professionals and more experienced hobbyists. These welding systems are especially the more expensive ones. These are made in such a way as to withstand intensive workloads  in terms of duration and frequency of use.

They are therefore recommended for professional welders and also want to make use of their system to satisfy their customers and to particularly demanding expert hobbyists who do not set spending limits to have a high-level equipment.

Frequent Asked Questions

How to adjust the continuous wire welder?

The adjustment of a continuous wire welding machine must be carried out, taking into account the work to be carried out, therefore based on the material, the thickness of the pieces to be welded, and the type of wire to be used.

The potentiometers on the welding machine allow you to adjust the output voltage and amperage, increasing or decreasing the voltage, i.e., the Volt, consequently increases or decreases the width of the bead. In contrast, the amperage affects the degree of penetration of the weld.

For example, to weld metal sheets with a thickness in the order of tenths of a millimeter, it is advisable to adjust both the Volt and the Ampere to the minimum allowed by the welding machine, so as not to run the risk of piercing the metal sheet; on the other hand, however, when working on thicker layers, both the voltage and the amperage can be increased, so that the welding is adequately deep and the bead wide enough to allow a perfect seal.

In the case of cheaper welders, and therefore not automatic, it is also necessary to adjust the quantity and type of protective gas used, active or inert, according to the material to be welded and the technique to be used; some welding techniques require high currents while others, such as the Short Arc, take advantage of short circuits, the Pulsed Arc uses pulsed current and so on.

The regulation relative to the wire exit speed, on the other hand, in addition to the type of welding, must also be set based on the operator’s experience; each welder on the market is accompanied by an instruction manual in which there is a section dedicated to illustrating the specific adjustments for that type of machine, therefore consulting the documentation is a necessary step for everyone, regardless of the level of experience.

Differences between the various types of welding machines

Welding techniques have had to keep up with the progress made in the metallurgical field. Consequently, today they have evolved becoming very sophisticated and above all diversified, to adapt to any type of metal alloy to offer maximum performance as regards solidity and tightness.

Therefore, each type of welding can be recognized by a short acronym that indicates its characteristics. The only abbreviations used in the Italian denomination are TIG, MIG, and MAG, the latter often combined in the form MIG-MAG or MIG-MAG, while all the other typologies are reported descriptively.

The acronym TIG stands for Tungsten Inert Gas, while MIG and MAG stand for Metal arc Inert Gas and Metal arc Active Gas, respectively. As you can see, therefore, the acronyms indicate the type of gas used. The same goes for other acronyms, such as WIG and FLUX, for example.

Each welding machine on the market, therefore, is recognizable through these abbreviations, which allow you to quickly identify the characteristics of the system and the type of welds it is able to perform. The substantial differences between the various wire welding machines consequently lie in their degree of versatility; some only perform MIG welding, others only TIG, some MIG-MAG, and so on.

How to use a wire welder

How the wire welder works

The one called “wire,” or “continuous wire” is a particular welding technique where the electrode is replaced precisely by a metal wire which allows to increase productivity by eliminating downtime due to continuous interruptions for replacement electrode. The method was developed during the Second World War by American engineers who were looking for a way to create welds that offered the same degree of tightness as the rivets so that they could be eliminated further to lighten the primary cell of their military aircraft.

The operating principle on which it is based is simple. The pieces to be welded are connected to the current generator in such a way that to close the electrical circuit and provoke the photovoltaic arc, just bring the torch with the wire to the pieces. The high temperature generated by the passage of current melts the metals instantly and creating a welding bath.

During the process, gas is also used which can be inert or active depending on the type of metal to be welded. Its primary purpose is to act as a “shirt” to protect the weld pool by isolating it from the air. This step is to prevent the surface layer of the welding bath from coming into contact with the oxygen contained in the air, oxidizing and irreparably damaging the weld.

How the wire welding machine works without gas

The gasless wire welder works on the same principle as the gas welder with the only difference being that instead of the standard wire. It uses the cored wire. This particular type of wire has inside a core of a metal different from that of the coating which serves to generate the welding filler material.

The purpose of the metal contained in the cores to produce slag and gas during welding to cover the bath and protect it from contact with air.

Ultimately, there is an obligatory passage for the protection of the welding bath in both welding techniques. Only one technique involves the introduction of inert, or active, gas during welding while the other uses slag and gases generated by the fusion of the core of the cored wire.
