The one called “wire,” or “continuous wire” is a particular welding technique where the electrode is replaced precisely by a metal wire which allows to increase productivity by eliminating downtime due to continuous interruptions for replacement electrode. The method was developed during the Second World War by American engineers who were looking for a way to create welds that offered the same degree of tightness as the rivets so that they could be eliminated further to lighten the primary cell of their military aircraft.
The operating principle on which it is based is simple. The pieces to be welded are connected to the current generator in such a way that to close the electrical circuit and provoke the photovoltaic arc, just bring the torch with the wire to the pieces. The high temperature generated by the passage of current melts the metals instantly and creating a welding bath.
During the process, gas is also used which can be inert or active depending on the type of metal to be welded. Its primary purpose is to act as a “shirt” to protect the weld pool by isolating it from the air. This step is to prevent the surface layer of the welding bath from coming into contact with the oxygen contained in the air, oxidizing and irreparably damaging the weld.

The gasless wire welder works on the same principle as the gas welder with the only difference being that instead of the standard wire. It uses the cored wire. This particular type of wire has inside a core of a metal different from that of the coating which serves to generate the welding filler material.
